Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan seen as potential ‘powder keg’
Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says there was concern Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would be a “powder keg” but instead the response so far seen from China has been “less than people had worried.”
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and five other Democratic members of Congress landed in Taipei on Tuesday evening local time, despite repeated warnings from China to avoid the island.
“Obviously, neither side in this party wants this to lead to conflict,” Professor Flake told Sky News Australia.
However, he said Taiwan is likely to feel economic punitive actions from China “in the days to come”.
