China to begin live fire exercises ‘surrounding’ Taiwan: US ‘must pay the price’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has touched down in Taiwan and hurled America’s support behind the country in a move infuriating China – which will soon begin live fire exercises around the island.
“Our visit reiterates that America stands with Taiwan: a robust, vibrant democracy and our important partner in the Indo-Pacific,” Mrs Pelosi said in a tweet.
The Global Times, a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party, said Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng summoned US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns overnight to protest Mrs Pelosi’s visit.
Mr Xie said the United States “must pay the price” for her arrival, according to the publication.
“China will take necessary and resolute countermeasures, and we mean what we say,” it said.
The Global Times said the live fire exercises would begin on Thursday and finish Sunday, local time.
“The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) will conduct important military exercises and training activities including live-fire drills in six large maritime areas and their air space surrounding the island of Taiwan, in its north, northeast, east, south, southwest and northwest, from Thursday noon to Sunday noon,” it said.
“Chinese officials and experts warned that all the consequences of this highly dangerous and provocative move will be borne by Washington.”
