Coal and gas can’t yet be ‘pushed out’ of the system completely
Australian Energy Council CEO Sarah McNamara says the capacity mechanism outlined by the Energy Security Board “will operate like an insurance policy for the market”.
“It will mean, as we’re transitioning to a net zero future, that we’ll have the right kind of generation in the market at any given point in time so we can ensure supply stays on,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“Acknowledging that we don’t yet have the kind of long-term storage options available, such that we could push coal and gas out of the system completely.”
