Sri Lanka navy stops boat holding 64 asylum seekers
Sri Lanka’s navy has intercepted 64 asylum seekers hoping to reach Australia’s shores on a fishing trawler off the country’s north-east coast.
The boat is the fourth to be detained while attempting to make the journey across the Indian Ocean since the federal election.
Three children were reported to be among the 64 – who were guaranteed safe passage to an Australian beach.
The group is set to be handed over to the local Harbour Police for legal proceedings.
