UK Rwanda deportation plan: ‘Not a refugee crisis, but a racism crisis’
Syrian filmmaker Hassan Akkad says the British government is creating a “two-tier system” with their new asylum seeker policy.
Mr Akkad argued the British government took a stance of: “If you’re from Ukraine, if you have fairer skin, if you have blue eyes, if you’re a civilised refugee -we will look after you.
“But if you’re from Afghanistan, or Sudan, or Syria, or any of these countries – no, we’re going to put you on the first flight somewhere else.”
“It’s not a refugee crisis, it’s a racism crisis,” he said.
Mr Akkad said asylum seekers from countries where Britain had been involved in war were the responsibility of the British government.
“British-made bombs were dropped on Yemen, Afghanistan – our shambolic evacuation … and Afghanistan falling to the Taliban is our responsibility, and Iraq is our responsibility,” he said.
“So, when people flee these countries and come here, the least we can do is treat them with dignity and respect and look after them.”
