Richard Marles’ ‘attitude’ to China is a ‘big shock’: Danby
Former Labor MP Michael Danby says revelations of Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles’ meetings with Chinese officials mean his planned “smash and grab” of the defence portfolio must look “dubious”.
Over the last five years, Mr Marles visited the Chinese embassy in Canberra to meet with China’s ambassador or other high-ranking officials on 10 occasions, according to The Australian.
Mr Danby said Australia is in an “ironic situation” where Shadow Defence Minister Brendan O’Connor and Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong look like a “surer pair of hands”.
“Richard Marles’ attitude to China is a shock, a big shock to me and to many people who were traditional right-of-centre Labor supporters,” Mr Danby told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“And I suspect (a shock) to Australians who are seeing a spy ship off the West Australian coast from an unfriendly country.”
