Labor to announce Pacific step up plan
Labor will step up its attack of the government’s Pacific policy as it outlines its plan to boost Australia’s presence in the region.
Labor will announce its plan to make Australia the “partner of choice” for its neighbours as concerns grow about the newly signed security pact between China and the Solomon Islands and the threat of a new Chinese military base.
It would include a new school to train defence and security forces from Pacific Island nations, and a doubling of funding for the Pacific Maritime Security Program.
On Monday, Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles doubled down on his criticism over the government’s handling of the Solomons deal, warning it would make Australia “less safe”.
