Labor pledges new disaster prevention fund
Labor is promising to boost spending on the prevention of national disasters through a revamp of the multi-billion-dollar emergency response fund.
The fund, established in 2019, allows the government to draw 50 million dollars a year to prepare for natural disasters – and a further 150 million for emergency response operations.
If elected, Labor is vowing to replace the scheme with a new-look ‘Disaster Ready Fund’.
It would dedicate all of the available $200 million towards disaster prevention by investing in new flood levees, cyclone shelters, fire breaks and evacuation centres.
Telecommunications in regional communities would also be upgraded.
