NASA launches mission with aim to deflect asteroid
NASA has launched its one-way mission which will intentionally crash a spacecraft into an asteroid.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test has blasted off from California – beginning its 10-month journey aimed at deflecting a space rock out of its orbit.
The NASA mission will help determine if it is possible to change the direction of an asteroid if Earth ever faces a potential doomsday collision.
The mission is a world-first demonstration of Earth's planetary defence system.
The target asteroid does not pose a hazard to Earth.
